After back-to-back tight losses, the Ray White Marsden Alan Kuss backed Yarrabilba Cane Toads have finally returned to the winners circle with a six-wicket victory over the Cuddle Koalas in the Jimboomba Times Division 2 Last Man Stands Beaudesert competition over the weekend.
Losing the toss and fielding first opening batsmen Michael Ballie and Tim Laidlaw set about attacking the Cane Toads bowlers before Gavin Andrews made a crucial breakthrough dismissing Ballie bowled for 28 from 20 deliveries, including two sixes and a boundary.
After the promising start from the Cuddle Koalas tight bowling and desperation in the field saw runs dry up.
Jordan Korte was the next man out when he departed for seven from 14 deliveries, some tough chances that were put down in the field soon saw the Cuddle Koalas wrestle the momentum back with Tim Laidlaw continuing his find form so far during the winter season retiring for 50 from 43 deliveries, including three boundaries.
Jacob Warren hit a six and a four before he became the second wicket of the match for Gavin Andrews, the powerful batsmen who was running hard in between wickets out for 26 from 18, before David Sheehan chipped in with the scalp of John Haim for one from three.
It was a final over to forget for Leigh Reading who on the the second last ball of the innings delivered a ball above waist height on the full leaving Jordan Haim a free-hit for the final ball, after warming up for it Haim connected with the Reading delivery sending it over the boundary for a Home Run (12 runs) quicker than it takes to get results from the team at Absolute Rehab and Physiotherapy Yarrabilba lifting the Cuddle Koalas to 138 for 4 from their 20 overs.
Gavin Andrews was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 2 for 13 from his four overs, David Sheehan finished with one for 16 with Chris Prothero being the other wicket taker for the Cane Toads finishing with 1 for 25.
Backing up their efforts with the ball Gavin Andrews opened the batting with David Sheehan as the Cane Toads, who have lost two tight games in a row after jumping out to a 2-0 start to the season, looked to get their innings off to a good start.
Andrews hit the only six of the innings for the Cane Toads on his way to a blistering knock of 31 from 17 deliveries to see the Yarrabilba side take the momentum, and that was continued when Reading and Sheehan continued ticking the scoreboard over once Andrews was caught by Ballie off a Jordan Haim delivery.
Sheehan’s day was over when he was forced to retire with 51 from 26 deliveries next to his name on the scorecard. Prothero and Reading had the Cane Toads ahead of the required run rate when Prothero was dismissed with victory in sight – Prothero bowled by Jordan Korte for 17 from 11.
Reading – not out on 24 from 25 deliveries – and Daniel Muller 14 from 12 deliveries – saw the Yarrabilba Cane Toads home in the 17th over with six wickets to spare to life the side back into fourth position, and more importantly keep their finals hopes alive by returning them to the winners circle.
