The Absolute Physio & Rehab Yarrabilba Cane Toads have secured a 108-run victory over the Mad Dogs at Malling Park – Waterford, to kick start the Logan District Cricket Association (LDCA) Division one competition in style.
Winning the toss, new First Grade skipper Pat Hansen, elected to bat first getting the first use of the Malling Oval turf wicket for the summer, things however didn’t go as planned with Josh Mullens dismissed by Matthews for two.
While Hansen looked in good nick to start the season, it was at the other end the batsmen were having all sorts of trouble with Hayden Donnollan trapped in front for one to become Sam Matthews second wicket of the match as the Cane Toads were reduced to 2 for 25.
Vice-Captain Matt Bailey joined Hansen in the middle with the pair setting about rescuing the innings, rotating the strike and inching their way to a 50-run partnership before Bailey was brought undone by a Graham delivery that didn’t bounce as expected and the dreaded death-rattle saw him departing for 25.
The match, preciously poised as it was, looked to be swinging in momentum between the two sides almost overly as the Cane Toads skipper Pat Hansen had his innings brought to and end on 36 when he was bowled by Cobbin, the Mad Dogs looked to take the upper hand with the quick key wickets of Mitchell Le Prou (23), Shaun Love (four) and Nick Mullens (four) to reduce the Cane Toads to seven for 112.
An unbeaten 39 by Cane Toads club debutant William Stratford, 20-unbeaten valuable runs by Murph Marurai and 14 from Zac Donnolan helped the Cane Toads reach 8 for 190 at the completion of their 35 overs.
Ben Sweeney finishing with 3 for 46, Sam Matthews with 2 for 36, but it was Gary Cobbin who stood out on the scorecard bowling a total of six overs, four of them maidens and taking two wickets for just five runs.
The Mad Dogs were finally let loose in their backyard, but unfortunately for the newly formed side with no doubt great potential, they batting more like a yapping dog barking at the postman from the safety of home instead of the bark of a vicious looking dog staring you down a dark ally.
Hayden Sheppard and Pubudu Buddhika were both dismissed without troubling the scorers, the stuttering start proving too much for the batting side to recover from with Graham dismissed for six, and Cobbin unable to back up his herorics with the ball dismissed for a duck.
Lance Newman (21) and Sam Matthews (32) provided some resistance to the Yarrabilba Cane Toads bowling attack however when they were dismissed it didn’t take long for the rest of the batsmen to follow with the Mad Dogs eventually being dismissed for 82 in the 22nd over.
Mitch Le Prou picking up 3 for 19 from his four overs, the left arm seam of William Stratford proved difficult for the batting side with Stratford picking up 3 for 22 from five overs. Shaun Love (1 for 9), Hayden Donnollan (1 for 25), and Twin Tiro (1 for 4 from three balls) were the other wicket takers for the Cane Toads.
The Yarrabilba Cane Toads 1st Grade are back in action this coming Saturday the 16th October 2021 at Selwyn Park against Beaudesert.
