It was not the result anyone was expecting, or had fathomed, when the urgent alert messages relating to the terrible weather the area was to receive that day hit mobile phones, when the Absolute Physio & Rehab Yarrabilba Cane Toads took on Beaudesert at Selwyn Park on Saturday.
As members of the public scurried to vote in the Queensland State Election prior to the hail-filled storms hitting the area, meanwhile across town at Selwyn Park Cane Toads skipper Nic Feros won the toss and elected to field first against the Beaudesert side looking to cement their position in the top half of the divisions ladder.
Jayden Stephan and Luke Gittins combined for the home side plundering an opening stand of 60, before a good set of hands behind the stumps by Patrick Hansen from the bowling of skipper Feros, saw the Cane Toads make a much needed breakthrough as Stephan departed stumped for 19 from as many balls.
Unfortunately with black clouds over head, rain falling from the sky and lightening around Selwyn Park umpire Mark Parry ordered the bails to be removed and the game was put on hold following the wicket.
As games across the district, Jimboomba v Loganholme and Greenbank v Logan Village, were abandoned due to the conditions Beaudesert and Yarrabilba Cane Toads players spent two and a half hours off the field with concerns about lighting strikes still visible when playing conditions were altered and play was resumed, both sides now to face 25 Overs.
Already seven overs into the now revised contest the Beaudesert side went about hungrily chasing runs, while the new restrictions caused headaches for Cane Toads skipper Nic Feros who had to adjust his bowling tactics to accommodate.
Andrew Steindl became the second casualty for Feros when he was caught by Hayden Mcavoy for a run-a-ball 13, but whatever momentum the Cane Toads had was quickly wiped out when Luke Gittins (105 from 63) and Daniel Samphier (not out 67 from 46) combined for a 134 run partnership that liften their side to 4 for 248 from their 25 overs.
Feros ending with 2 for 67 from 5 overs, and Wayne Woods 2 for 29 as the batsmen had a day out.
The Cane Toads were already going to face an uphill battle with such a score, with the addition of another player needing to leave for work, and club President Brendon McCoy dislocating his shoulder, in his First Grade debut for the club, in the final over of Beaudeserts batting innings.
Cane Toads vice-captain Wayne Woods departed early for 4 when he was caught by Klease to be the first of two wickets for the opening bowler, the Cane Toads struggled from the early departure with wickets falling at regular intervals Shaun Love top scored with 20 from 43 before after 17 overs and the Cane Toads struggling at 7 for 56 skipper Feros conceded victory.
“It’s disappointing, we are enjoying the Yarrabilba set up and are working so hard to try and get the first win on the board. It will come.” A disappointed Feros said following the match.
The Cane Toads next match is against the Jimboomba Bushrangers and Glenlogan Park this Saturday with play starting at 12:30pm.
